Harrah Church

Are You a Runner?

I was recently at my parents house watching a movie called The Blindside. It is a great film if you haven’t already seen it and I want to suggest very strongly that you do. There is a scene in the movie where the main character is described as being a “Runner.” When things get tough or weird this guy is going to run from the situation. This week I was reading through an article in the Harvard Business Review that has to do with corporate ethics and leading your team. He said that some people have a hard time “sticking it out” when it comes to the refining work of the community and leadership in their lives that seeks to help them grow.
There is so much truth to that. Many of us would rather run than face our faults. We let fear get the best of us. We don’t believe that God would create and ordain a community of people to speak into and shape our lives for the better. That is a bunch of hooey. There is a saying in the preaching community that you should speak to people about there sin but be careful not to get “to meddling.” I want to let you know that until we become uncomfortable with our sin we are probably not really working to become more like Christ.
Do you leave when people start meddling in changing your personal “issues?”
Do you see yourself in relationship to others?
The problem with gossip is that it is an action that is all talk and no confrontation. Until we can work towards challenging each other every day to become more like Christ and learn to have the fortitude to stick around when things get tough, we will continue to carry around the same bag of personal “junk” that we started this journey with. The truth is that until we learn to stop running and start unpacking our bags are only going to continue to get heavier with all the junk we pick up along the way. If you put a bunch of junk in your car it gets messy. Leave it long enough and it will start to stink. Leave it a little bit longer and it will draws the attention of bugs.
This community called Harrah Church is important because we are working to help each other discover a God that wants to take our trash. Sometimes we need help getting that trash to the curb. That help is one part of what we believe Biblical Community should look like.
Are you in a community group? Speak with Dustin Murray this weekend and discover a group of people who can help you take your junk to the curb.
